Sainsbury’s to launch full line of milk in flexible bags
Sainbury's milk bags in reusable jugWith the initial sales success of its semi-skimmed milk in flexible bags, the UK retailer launched “whole milk” in bags Wednesday with 1%-fat milk bags to debut in June 2011. Long a staple of fresh-milk distribution in Canada, flexible-bag packaging of milk in the UK is beginning to skyrocket. The bags are made from low-density polyethylene and fit inside a reusable jug, which contains a spike that pierces the bag, forms a no-leak seal, and delivers milk through the spout. Among the packaging’s environmental benefits: Switching to bags could save up to 3.08 million lbs of packaging every year. The bags use 75% less plastic than a bottle and are cheaper to produce.
