WS Packaging CEO Fulwiler wins Avery Lifetime Achievement Award
Terry Fulwiler, CEO of label printing and converting giant WS Packaging Group, Inc., has won the 2010 R. Stanton Avery Lifetime Achievement Award. He was selected as the overall winner by the international label industry Labelexpo Americas 2010 logojudging panel at the FINAT Congress in Valencia, Spain, following a review of the online votes against the criteria. The award, sponsored by supplier Avery Dennison, recognizes the values and vision of Stan Avery and his pioneering efforts in the label industry.

In 1972, Terry joined his father’s company when there were 25 employees, and he served in a variety of management positions leading to his promotion to CEO in 1987. Now, having over 1,775 employees at 17 locations across the US and Mexico, WI-based WS Packaging Group produces labels, flexible packaging, and promotional products, as well as continuously introduces new and innovative products. Fulwiler will be honored Sept. 14 at the Label Industry Global Awards ceremony on the Spirit of Chicago, Navy Pier, on the opening day of Labelexpo Americas 2010. More info

Omet tackles the challenge of Chinese “scratch and win”
OMET Varyflex VF 530 Lottery PressThe Italian printing-press maker’s Varyflex VF 530 system (right) has been installed as the Chinese government’s ticket-production system for its second-largest instant lottery. Composed of two machines, the largest of which is 183 ft long, the line runs at speeds up to 650 fpm on a triple-shift operation. The press combines UV-flexo, water-based flexo, UV-offset and digital-inkjet printing; then conducts 100% inspection to guarantee that no error, double, or missing ticket reaches the marketplace. Tickets are all individually monitored, identified through a barcode and stored. “Film festival” provides prelude to K 2010 Oct. 25-26
K 2010 LogoThe SPF 2010 Speciality Plastic Films conference will showcase several world premieres during the event the two days immediately prior to K 2010. Set for Oct. 25-26 at the Hilton Hotel in Düsseldorf, Germany, the conference will cover business and technology developments in all areas of food and non-food flexible packaging as well as in technical films. New breakthroughs in materials and processing technologies critical for film and sheet producers and users will be unveiled. Brand owners Procter & Gamble and Unilever will talk about their own developments and the implications for their suppliers. More info

Four label converters named finalists for sustainability award
The 2010 finalists for the Label Industry Global Converter Award for Sustainability / Environmental Responsibility include Paragon Label / Mrs. Grossman, Spear, Speciality Printing and Vintage 99 Label Mfg. The award recognizes the label converter who, in the opinion of the judging panel, has introduced and maintained the most sustainable and environmentally acceptable working practices into their purchasing and manufacturing operations and can demonstrate key materials, production, performance or consumer benefits. The winner will be announced Sept. 14 at the Label Industry Global Awards ceremony during Labelexpo Americas 2010. More info
