US produce-packaging demand up 3.6% a year to 2014
Topping out at $4.8 billion in 2014, growth will be fueled by a rebound in fresh-produce production and improved consumer spending in a recovering US economy, says a new Freedonia Group study. Packaging demand will be further aided by retailer preferences for display-ready packaging to hold down labor costs and a favorable outlook for consumer-convenience. Corrugated boxes, which made up 38% of produce packaging last year, will remain the leading packaging type. Flexibles, such as bags and liners, will generate $1.4 billion in produce-packaging sales in 2014, rising 3.1% a year. Rigid-plastic containers (clamshells and lidded boxes) will see the fastest gains, with demand increasing 6.1% annually to $1.1 billion four years hence. More info
