FPA members sponsor converting-industry summer interns
Three Flexible Packaging Assn. converter members will participate in the fifth annual FPA Flexible Packaging Academic Scholarship & Summer Internship Program. American Packaging Corp. welcomes University of Wisconsin-Stout student Scott Evers as an intern at the Story City, IA, facility; CL&D Graphics is sponsoring packaging school student Rachel Wisth, who also attends the University of Wisconsin-Stout; and, Constantia Hueck Foils welcomes Western Michigan University student Kelly Peters. The students will learn about various aspects of the flex-pack industry including daily facility operations, package design and product manufacturing. FPA and the sponsoring converters will award academic scholarships to each of the students upon successful completion of their summer internship.
E Ink, Chilin Technology form partnership for e-paper displays
Electronic paper-display maker E Ink® Corp. and Chilin Technology Corp., an integrated flat-panel display maker, will collaborate on low-power industrial and other specialized electrophoretic displays. The partnership makes the patented E Ink VizplexTM imaging film available to Chilin for mass production, distribution and customer sales. Pro/Con Converter Warning: According to E Ink vp-global marketing Sriram Peruvemba, solutions with E Ink/Chilin technology reduce dependency on paper, printed labels, and large batteries. It also opens the door to new small- and medium-sized display opps for medical devices, automation and smart labels. Market research firm DisplaySearch says the e-paper market is expected to reach $9 billion in 2018.
Aussie packaging printer installs Agfa Dotrix Modular digital press
Flexible packaging and bottle-label specialist Le Mac Australia Group (Mulgrave, NSW) adds the Dotrix Modular digital UV-inkjet press to handle print buyers trending toward shorter runs with greater variety. Its clients include major brands such as Coca-Cola, Unilever and Diageo. The 25-in.-wide Dotrix Modular runs substrates from thin flexible foils to folding-carton stocks. Traditional UV-flexo printing stations can serve as coating and varnishing stations on the roll-to-roll basic configuration. More info
Nustream Graphics to distribute Agfa to new Canadian markets
The full-service dealer inks a deal to distribute Agfa Graphics prepress solutions. Industry vets Jonathan Rogers will manage Ontario-based accounts and Steve Daigle will handle Quebec-based accounts for small- to mid-sized printers. Products will include consumables, hardware, software, and services for production workflow, design and color management; CtP, CtF and digital proofing systems. More info
