Film maker Tredegar reports improved Q1 2010 results
Richmond, VA-based substrate provider Tredegar Corp. saw Q1 net income of $5.8 million compared with a net loss of $28.8 million in Q1 2009. Film Products’ operating profit increased 41% from Q1 last year as volume increased 11% YOY.

Boise shows Q1 2010 net loss but higher packaging-product sales
Idaho-based Boise, Inc, today reported a net loss of $12.7 million for Q1 2010 compared with a Q1 2009 net loss of $0.9 million. Says president/CEO Alexander Toeldte, “We grew our premium office, label and release, and flexible-packaging products sales volumes 17% over the prior year, experienced strong demand in our corrugated-packaging products, and continued to deliver solid results in our office papers business.”

Klöckner Pentaplast will invest in new European film capacity
Klöckner Pentaplast Group says it will enhance production capabilities with a $54-million investment in new state-of-the-art film-manufacturing equipment at its two German facilities. Startup is targeted for the first half of 2011. Closure of the Muri, Switzerland, plant is a possibility, the company says.

Hot time in MA: Sonoco to add new boilers at Holyoke paper mill
Paper-products maker Sonoco will invest $2.8 million to install two high-efficiency, natural gas-fired boilers at its 100% uncoated recycled paper mill in Holyoke, MA. Construction is expected to be completed in August 2010. Sonoco also converts paper tubes/cores at a separate Holyoke location that uses approximately 80% of the paperboard produced at the neighboring paper mill.

HB Fuller sets adhesives price increase for North America
The company will implement a price hike for water-based, hot-melt and reactive adhesives, averaging between 8 and 15%, effective June 1.

M-Real meets 2009 Energy Efficiency Systems targets
European primary-fiber paperboard producer M-Real met its target to implement an Energy Efficiency System (EES) in all its production units by end 2009. The latest major project: The Husum mill’s new $30-million turbine investment to improve electricity self-sufficiency from 30 to 50%. Project to be completed by end 2010.
